International Fresh Produce Association has been monitoring the development of packaging regulations across the globe.
IFPA's Alliance for Sustainable Packaging for Foods:
IFPA has successfully formed the Alliance for Sustainable Packaging for Foods, aimed at broadening the coalition of stakeholders involved in packaging regulations. The alliance encompasses various groups, including fresh produce associations from the US, Canada, Mexico, Chile, and South Africa, as well as trade associations representing meat, dairy, organic, and sustainable packaging sectors, along with food safety-focused non-governmental organizations (NGOs). In the EU, the alliance is advocating for:
- Exemption of fresh cut and fresh produce categories from bans on the use of plastic packaging.
- Exempting functional PLU stickers from the definition of packaging.
- Allowing retailers to disallow the refill of and releasing retailers from liability for any food safety issues arising from reusable/refillable packaging.
IFPA’s Max Teplitski serves as chair of the Alliance.
Trilogue Negotiations on PPRW:
Trilogue negotiations involving the EU Parliament, Commission, and Council are currently underway regarding the PPRW. These negotiations have been extended by at least two more weeks. However, on the issues outlined above, consensus has not yet been reached.
IFPA's Continued Advocacy:
IFPA, along with its partners in the Alliance and lobbyists, remains actively engaged in advocating for the industry's interests amidst these negotiations. Should you have any questions or require further information, please do not hesitate to reach out.
